Frida Sundemo: Singer and actress in Kill Your Friends film adaptation of John Niven book

The Scandipop frenzy has died down a bit, so it seems like a perfect time to talk about Swedish artist Frida Sundemo.

After piquing a fair amount of interest with her acclaimed debut EP Indigo, Sundemo went on to release more music and also appeared in the film adaptation of John Niven's Kill Your Friends, alongside Nicholas Hoult and Rosanna Arquette.

Three of Sundemo's tracks were featured, including her new single "Heroes", while the track "You" appeared on TV series Scream Queens.

Sundemo has an exquisite voice that sounds light as air, recalling Imogen Heap and her work with Frou Frou. Check out some of her work below:

Q&A with Frida Sundemo

What was it like working on Kill Your Friends?

It was such an amazing experience. I love getting into new situations and to learn about new worlds and being a part of Kill Your Friends was definitely one great opportunity for me to do that. I didn’t know anything about the film industry before so I was truly excited about it. I was so impressed by the whole film crew – everyone from the runners to the director, Owen. All of them were so friendly and the team felt like a big whole family.

Also, I got to stay in Shoreditch for three weeks while shooting the film and since I love that area it was pretty much like living a dream life.

Who do you cite as your main/current musical influences?

Hans Zimmer, Tom Waits, Radiohead, Björk, Para One, Stimming, Boys Noise and Loney Dear. And of course Andy Williams.

Which artists have you been listening to recently?

I just got my grandad’s old vinyl player to work so I’m only listening to vinyls at the moment. Which means a lot of Dave Brubeck, Bromma Disco and one random LP called “Best Of Bouzouki”, haha. I love listening to instrumental music. Also, I just bought "OK Computer" by Radiohead on vinyl and that is one of my favorite albums of all time.

First gig, best gig?

The first gig I ever did was an acoustic set on the local rock club in my hometown, Gothenburg. The place is called Sticky Fingers and playing there was a huge deal to me since I had been there so many times before listening to my musical heroes. I guess half the audience were family to me. I remember my uncle running towards the stage at the end of the show, throwing flowers over me. That was a bit embarrassing but really cute.

The best show I have ever experienced was last year in Barcelona. I played on a festival called BAM festival and it was that perfect late summer’s evening. Really crowded and the audience were fantastic. I remember feeling totally free on stage, which is everything I aim for when performing.
