Lady Gaga's album
Born This Way album is projected to have sold one million copies in the US in the first week of sales, according to Billboard, based on Amazon's sales of 330,000 copies on Monday, May 23, the first day of release.
With the overwhelming response to the website's special 99-cent price for Gaga's album, the heavy traffic crashed the servers and the technological snafu put sales temporarily on hold. The 99-cent deal resumed May 24 and was was expected to generate another 150,000 in sales.
Billboard also projected that Born This Way would debut in first place, knocking Adele off the top spot, even if sales fell short of projections and were closer to the 800,000 range.
At the extra low rate offered via Amazon's Gold Box Daily Deal, the album was selling at approximately a $6 loss to Amazon, but the real payoff was the assured chart position and increased profile for Amazon's cloud service.
Amazon's Cloud Drive allows consumers to access music libraries from its central storage. Any album purchase provides users with 20 more gigabytes in addition to the free five gigabytes of free storage for signing up.
The volume of Gaga album sales from the deep discount was intended to get a jump on rival iTunes' yet-to-be launched cloud drive.
On Tuesday, May 31, Billboard chart positions will determine if Lady Gaga meets or beats Taylor Swift's record for selling one million copies of Speak Now in the first week of release - and if Amazon's Cloud Drive benefited from the sales surge.
