The lineup for the 2010 Lollapalooza Festival was posted online on March 31, several days in advance of the official April 6 announcement. Curious fans need to put in some effort to get the early news: the information is hidden behind a Wheel of Fortune-style board where the number of letters and words correspond to the band names.

Such viral-style announcements appear to be a trend among this year's music festivals: In March, music fans were invited to visit the Bonnaroo Festival website for a slowly unfolding lineup announcement, intended to encourage fans to interact as they discovered each programmed act.

So far, all of the "O"s in the Lollapalooza guessing game have been revealed. Given this scant information, the editors at Rolling Stone have been working to crack the code and are so far convinced of several bands set to play at the festival. Alert! Spoiler after the jump...

According to RS, Soundgarden, Phoenix, and the Strokes are among the six headliners, with the other three appearing to be Green Day (or possibly Pearl Jam), Lady Gaga, and Arcade Fire. Other bands all but confirmed based on the placement of Os: Spoon, Hot Chip, Devo, The New Pornographers, Gogol Bordello, The National, and likely The Morning Benders.

First launched in 1991 by Perry Farrell, lead singer of Jane's Addiction, Lollapalooza is an iconic American festival with its roots in the alternative music scene. The festival was inactive for a few years but is now set to run through 2011. An early batch of 3-day passes going for $175 sold out in August; further ticket information is likely to accompany the lineup announcement on April 6.
