Album: Andy Mackay & The Metaphors, London! Paris! New York! Rome! (Andy Mackay Music)
The Independent's chief rock critic gives an exclusive preview of this month’s releases
The intention of Roxy Music reedsman Andy Mackay’s new band is to “create disturbing beauty for your minds and hearts”, an aim to which they remain true throughout this album of instrumentals.
Several are loosely inspired by previous songs, though only occasionally does the source inspiration poke through the arrangement: “New York, New York” is a jazzy piano-based bricolage, while both “Waterloo Sunset” and “Love Is The Drug” are virtually unrecognisable, the latter’s softly lilting blend of warm sax and twinkly harp and piano lashed together by dub bass and The Great Paul Thompson’s crisp funk backbeat.
But it’s the opener “Three Coins In A Fountain”, a stompy art-rocker with oboe, piano, harp and cloudchamber bowl percussion, that best suggests the impressive power of The Metaphors.
