“Moustaches bring you love!” I turn around and am embraced by a trio of muddy girls with voices like blackboard scraping, hay hanging from every nook, and lipstick smudged all over their faces. It is Sunday afternoon at the Secret Garden Party 2010, and despite 2 days and 3 nights of mischief, the spirit of the Garden Party is still being secreted with passion at every juncture. It is impossible not to fall in love: with the legions of beautiful people, with the intimate feel of the festival (despite having doubled in size to over 20,000 people this year), with the perfect range of music, and the endless supply of shenanigans, side-shows, and moments of sheer brilliance.

Sadly I was only able to make one day of Lovebox this year, but either I picked the best day by far... or the whole festival must have been phenomenal.

Forty years ago, dairy farmer Michael Eavis put on his first music festival at Worthy Farm, Pilton. Just over a thousand hippies parted with £1 to see T-Rex perform and enjoy a pint or two of free milk from the farm’s Friesians.

"Michael Stipe once said you shouldn't wear sunglasses on stage because it demonstrates disrespect for your audience," said Matt Berninger, lead singer of Brooklyn-based rockers The National. "But the sun is shining into my eyes and is burning my corneas." If anything defined this year's Glastonbury, it was the heat. Dry, uncompromising, and painfully affecting. The same, of course, could be said for Berninger's music.

"Please bring sun protection with you!" announced the Glastonbury organiser Emily Eavis yesterday. It will be music to the ears of the 180,000 who will descend on Worthy Farm over the next few days.
