Barbra Streisand: 'We're living in the nightmare of Donald Trump'

Barbra Streisand has torn into Donald Trump during a virtual fundraising concert for presidential candidate Joe Biden.

Singers John Legend, Andra Day and Adam Lambert all performed for Biden with 100 days to go until the next US election.

But, it was Streisand’s closing speech which made the biggest mark. Lasting for eight minutes, her words were both an endorsement of Biden and a diatribe against Trump.

“Let’s face it, Trump is unfit, mentally and morally, to hold this distinguished office,” she said, adding that the president is “dangerous to our health”.

Streisand also addressed recent events in which Trump brought in the military amid protests against the death of George Floyd after white police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for more than eight minutes.

“A few weeks ago, Trump called out the troops against peaceful protesters. That is what cowards do when they are scared.”

Streisand continued: “Donald Trump has failed us. And we cannot survive four more years of his incompetence we’re feeling right now. [Biden] will listen to people rather than greeting them with guns. All they want is justice. It’s as simple as that.”

She said that Biden would be a president “with grace and dignity who has respect for the truth unlike Trump, who doesn’t believe in facts”.

Streisand added: “We’re living in the nightmare of Donald Trump – this reckless man doesn’t have the wisdom or the character to lead our nation.”

Others to share short messages of support for Biden included Oscar-winning actor Julianne Moore, director Lee Daniels and former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

Biden was absent from the virtual fundraiser, but the event’s host – Jay Leno – said that more than $760,000 had been raised via viewer contributions.
