When the trailer for The Social Network – David Fincher's film about the creation of Facebook – appeared, it was soundtracked by a choir singing a haunting a capella version of Radiohead's "Creep".

People joked that using said music could make anything seem profound, as evinced by people compiling affecting videos of silly YouTube clips backed by the music. For the actual film, however, they have changed tack, with an original soundtrack made by Trent Reznor and the English musician Atticus Ross (pictured). It's released on Tuesday, but in the meantime they're giving away a five-track sampler at nullco.com/TSN/. From these initial offerings it seems like they've taken things darker than the choir with sparse, electronica-led instrumentals.

A flight of fancy from Phoenix

It's over a year since the Phoenix released their much loved album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. The French indie-rockers have been touring the record in the US in recent weeks and as this draws to a close they're giving a gift to their fans. Like Radiohead and others before, they've broken down each song from the album into its constituent parts and offered them up to all-comers to rearrange and remix. The multi-track downloads are freely available on the band's website at ind.pn/anzaYd, where they also left a nice note to their US fans, "You've made every moment since the release of Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix superb and we want to thank you with a few presents before our last show in the US for a while (you never know how long we'll take to record the next album)."

Halcyon days for Deerhunter

The fourth album by the US four-piece Deerhunter comes out next week; before that you can hear it streamed in full at npr.org/music. The record, Halcyon Digest, is a brilliant leap forward, with blasts of art-rock and noise mingling alongside dreamy ambience, psychedelia and pop flourishes. While you're at it, UK producer Star Slinger, has remixed one track from the album for a new EP, hear the "Helicopter" remix at ind.pn/ahaSbn. He reimagines the song as a glitchy and floating number, equal parts J Dilla, Flying Lotus and chillwave.

A short burst of style from Eleanor

Over on the fashion and culture site Nowness.com they're showing a new short film made for the fashion label VPL by the director James Oakley. The unusual psychedelic-looking experimental short "Her/She" co-stars Eleanor Friedberger of The Fiery Furnaces. The art-rock brother-sister duo also provided a suitably odd soundtrack. Tied to this, Eleanor has created an 11-song playlist for the site, featuring Sparks, John Cale, Brian Eno, T Rex, Sparks. Find it all at ind.pn/d6NhQN.
