Justin Bieber wrote ‘Where Are U Now’ when he was 15 and here’s the video to prove it

First version of the track was written 'during a tough time in his life'

Hate Justin Bieber all you want, ‘Where Are U Now’ is a bonafide jam and you know it.

You might think it’s entirely the work of producers Diplo and Skrillex, with Justin just popping into the studio to sing from a lyric sheet, but in fairness to him, the seed of the song was planted back in 2009.

In the video below, he sings and plays piano on Where Are You Now - an admittedly very different version of the song from the dance banger it would later turn into.

Where Are Ü Now, which came six years later, was a huge hit, attracting over 160 million views and kick-starting a new phase in his career - a “Biebound” if you will - that has also seen him nab a number one for the track What Do You Mean?

“Justin wrote this record during a tough time in his life and it comes to us that sometimes, as artists, we are also just objects and we have to take that as much as we have to use that to create,” Jack Ü (Diplo and Skrillex) said of Where Are Ü Now.
