Swedish filmmaker Jonas Akerlund filmed the 30th anniversary gala of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles last November, a star-studded event featuring a performance by Lady Gaga and dancers from the Bolshoi Ballet. Entitled "Ballets Russes Italian Style (The Shortest Musical You Will Never See Again)," the footage captures the spectacle as performance art.
The spectacle, a production created by Italian video artist Francesco Vezzoli, is conveyed in the format of a trailer promoting the event, although it has already passed. Akerlund reportedly wanted to create a trailer for something that was over and would never happne again.
Images include a behind-the-scenes look and excerpts of Lady Gaga performing her song "Speechless." She wears a sculpted silvery hat designed by architect Frank Gehry and plays on a rotating pink grand piano with blue butterflies painted by British artist Damien Hirst.
Akerlund directed Lady Gaga's "Paparazzi" video and her upcoming "Telephone" music video.
