Michael Jackson's Thriller becomes first ever album to sell over 30 million records in the US

When Thriller was first released back in 1982, it sent the already mega-famous Michael Jackson stratospheric.

All nine tracks could have been singles, such was the brilliance of the entire album, which has now set another amazing record.

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) announced (via Billboard) that Thriller has sold more than 30 million records in the US alone, making it the first ever album to be certified 30 times multi-platinum.

Worldwide, Jackson’s sixth solo record has sold over 100 million, the singer having accumulated over 1-billion album sales in total.

"RIAA has awarded Gold & Platinum records on behalf of the music business for nearly 60 years, but this is the first time an artist has crossed the 30X multi-Platinum plateau," RIAA chairman and CEO Cary Sherman said in a statement.

"We are honored to celebrate the unique status of Thriller in Gold & Platinum history. What an exceptional achievement and testament to Thriller's enduring spot in our hearts and musical history.”

In the UK, Thriller is the 6th best-selling album ever, overtaken by Adele’s 21 in 2012. The best selling album is Greatest Hits by Queen.
