The Rolling Stones surprised fans yesterday by releasing a new single that wasn't that bad.

Despite being their first single in six years (and not having had a hit in a helluva lot longer than that), "Doom and Gloom" finds the band (average age now 68) on fine form. The track, which debuted on Chris Evans's Radio 2 breakfast show, is a playful blues-rock banger that is probably closest in scope to their 1972 classic Exile on Main Street. It is also one of two new tracks that will appear on GRRR!, a greatest-hits compilation to be released next month in celebration of the band's 50th anniversary.

The Stones for Glastonbury 2013? Oh go on, guys.
