Oasis scooped up NME pop music magazine's award for best British band on Wednesday, while former US president George W. Bush was named villain of the year for a record-breaking sixth time.

NME's readers, who decide the awards, voted Muse best live band for the second year in a row, fending off competition from fellow Brits Oasis and Tennessee foursome Kings of Leon. Muse also received the award for best artwork for its album "HAARP."

Oasis's Noel Gallagher, originally from Manchester, was also recognised for best band blog, while Barack Obama, the newest occupant of the White House, was named hero of the year.

"Oasis have proved yet again, with a triumphant seventh album that our love affair with them simply has no sign of ending," NME's editor Conor McNicholas said in a statement. "The stateside scene continues to go from strength to strength."

Readers gave Las Vegas band The Killers the title of best international band for the third year in a row.

US acts did well in other categories too, with Grammy award-winning Kings of Leon collecting the best album award for "Only By The Night." New York duo MGMT picked up the awards for best new band and best track for "Time to Pretend."

Television presenter Alexa Chung walked away with the best dressed award, while boyfriend and Arctic Monkey's frontman Alex Turner scooped up best video for The Last Shadow Puppets. His band also got the nod for best DVD for "At the Apollo."
