Pharrell Williams’ chart-topping single Happy has sold over a million copies in the UK - securing him a hat trick of million-seller records in just 12 months.

Happy, which Pharrell performed at Sunday night’s Academy Awards, launches Pharrell into an exclusive club with The Beatles - the achievement makes him only the second act in history to bag more than two million-sellers in the UK.

The US rapper also sold over a million copies last year of both Blurred Lines, his collaboration with Robin Thicke, and Get Lucky with Daft Punk.

The Oscar-nominated Happy, which featured in animated hit Despicable Me 2, lost out to Demi Lovato’s Let It Go for festive film Frozen at the 86th Academy Awards .

But if Pharrell was feeling glum, there was a silver lining – on Sunday Happy also became the first track in 57 years to cinch the number one spot in the UK charts on three non-consecutive occasions.

He told “I am beyond grateful for the amount of love and support I've received in response to Happy  - it is overwhelming.

"I've always respected the great taste of the UK, and I'm honoured to have my music embraced in such a positive way. I am so thankful.”

The other two acts to achieve this feat were Frankie Laine with I Believe in 1953, and Guy Mitchell with Singing the Blues in 1957.

To round things off, Pharrell released his new album G I R L on Monday.

It’s probably safe to he’s feeling “happy”.
