Radio 1's Big Weekend: One Direction, Katy Perry and Bastille added to line-up

Coldplay and Lily Allen are among the acts set to perform next month

One Direction and Katy Perry have been announced as the top pop acts for Radio 1’s Big Weekend next month.

The boyband will open the free music extravaganza on Saturday 24 May in Glasgow, with Tennessee rockers Kings of Leon performing at the same time the following day.

“Dark Horse” singer Perry has been booked as the headline act on the Sunday. Fifty thousand people are expected to turn up over the weekend.

“We’re so excited, Glasgow we’re coming to get you,” One Direction told DJ Nick Grimshaw on his Breakfast Show this morning.

Perry voiced her enthusiasm too, joking that while she is “typically depressed on Sunday nights” she’ll be “shaking it off for this particular weekend”.

“I’m very excited because some of my friends will be there,” the US pop star said, admitting that Harry Styles is her favourite One Direction member. “Rita Ora, Chvrches. I love The 1975. Your Saturday line-up is dope.”

Other acts newly-announced for the festival include Bastille, The Vamps, John Newman, Jake Bugg, Tinie Tempah and Kasabian.

Ed Sheeran, who described Glasgow as a “mental place to go and do shows”, will also be appearing alongside Lily Allen, who has promised “some exciting surprises”.

Coldplay, Pharrell Williams, Rita Ora and Paolo Nutini are among artists already confirmed, with Radio 1 DJs Annie Mac, Zane Lowe and Pete Tong kicking off proceedings with a massive outdoor party on the Friday.

Last year’s Big Weekend in Londonderry saw Calvin Harris, Bruno Mars and Biffy Clyro top the bill.
