Stormzy is fast becoming one of the most crucial, forward thinking artists in the UK, leading the grime renaissance alongside the likes of Skepta, JME and Lethal Bizzle.

However, recently his fan base has come under attack for apparently being predominantly ‘rich middle-class white kids’ with no understanding of where grime comes from.

In an interview with Clash, the rapper stated that it was a “dickhead argument”, stating his own love for Coldplay even though he doesn’t know the history of the band’s catalogue (Coldplay notoriously being one of the most hated bands in the world).

“I couldn’t give a shit where you’re from. It don’t matter. I don’t care if it’s a white millionaire kid from Oxfordshire who comes to my show, buys my record, supports me and rates me. It’s cool.

“I like flipping Coldplay. And I like Jessie Ware. But I’m sure how we grew up was totally different. I don’t know the history of Coldplay’s catalogue, and I don’t know the history of indie rock, but I f**king think they’re sick. I respect what they do. I love their music.”

Stormzy also elaborated on his past comments about the BRITS, having rapped in the song “One Take”: “None of my Gs nominated for BRITs? Are you taking the piss? Embarrassing.”

“I feel like they embarrassed themselves very badly,” he added. “To the point where it’s like, bruv, all the kids in Britain are listening to the likes of Skepta, Jme, Lethal Bizzle, Section Boyz... These are young British kids. They’re coming to the shows, buying the records. In British music you have indie, rock… Grime is now one of those pillars. It’s a foundation of British music.”

The situation has made him appreciate when Kanye West brought a whole host of grime MCs on stage to perform “All Day” at the BRITS last year.

“At the time I didn’t quite realise what he was saying. I respect him so much for that. He said, ‘Oh, these guys never want you to get awards. Come, just come - let’s fuck up the place for one day.’”

“But I didn’t want [the lyric] to come across angry, like I’m outraged. This time, we’re politely telling you, you embarrassed yourself. That’s it. Onto the next one.”

Stormzy was recently announced to be playing Glastonbury Festival later this year. Read the full line-up here.
