Taylor Swift celebrated three wins at last night’s 2012 MTV EMA awards in Frankfurt, Germany.

The country singer won in the categories Best Female, Best Live, and Best Look, before performing her hopeful-sounding track, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”.

Over 184 million people voted for the awards online and by mobile phone, which also saw three gongs going to Justin Bieber, for “Best Pop”, “Best Live” and “Best Male”, while his mentee Carly Rae-Jepson won two for her track “Call Me Maybe”.

Another of the year’s break-out stars, Lana Del Rey won “best alternative” and the new, but now world-famous, Psy won best video for “Gangnam Style”, which has become the most popular online music video ever. The Asian music scene was also honoured as Chinese artist Han Geng won Best Worldwide Act, and who follows in the footsteps of South Korean act BIGBANG who won the prize last year.

There was a sombre note as the late Whitney Houston was named as a global icon, the honour being introduced by her friend Alicia Keys.

Heidi Klum, the German model and TV presenter played host, while the likes of Keys, Pitbull, The Killers, Muse and a return from No Doubt.

British stars were represented with performances from Rita Ora and Muse, while One Direction won in the categories “Best New” and “Biggest Fans”, which presumably means fanbase, rather than giant supporters.

Picking up the Best Look award for the most stylish act, Swift said: "I am so excited I can't believe you gave me three awards."

She added: "I'm kind of insecure in general so this is great for my self-confidence".

Boyband One Direction won Best New Act, before Keys picked up the Global Icon Award on behalf of the family of the late Whitney Houston and praised the singer's "incredible ability to captivate and mesmerise us".

She told the audience Houston "was my home girl, my friend" before introducing a tribute video which included messages from One Direction and Lady Gaga.
