Another older black talent supported by younger artists – here, indie stalwarts Jon Spencer, The Mekons and The Sadies – Andre Williams is a renegade r'*'b spirit who remains, in his seventies, as scurrilous as ever.
Recorded just after one of his stints in jail, Night and Day finds him unapologetically celebrating bad behaviour, over backings ranging from Creedence swamp-rock to honky-tonk bluegrass. Much here is blackly amusing: excoriating his nation in "America", he observes, "The men are dogs, the women are hogs/But that ain't a bad thing".
