Album: Arturo O'Farrill and the Afro-Latin Orchestra, Song for Chico, (Zoho)

Pianist and composer/ arranger/"educator" Arturo O'Farrill (son of the late Latin jazz legend Chico) leads a monster 18-piece NYC big band, but the real deal here is the interplay of modernist dissonance with rhythmic drive and fat horn licks, heard to great effect on "Humility" by Tom Harrell.

There's a stonking version of Juan Tizol's "Caravan", two old Chico numbers, a Tito Puente and a pair of absolute standouts in the title track and Arturo's own "Such Love".
