Former NYU room-mates Daniel Rossen and Fred Nicolaus began life as a muck-about band who, inspired by Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks' Smile, locked themselves into an expensive studio they could barely operate.
The songs here were intended for the pair's aborted second album, and the experimental nature is acknowledged in the fact that five tracks are named "Practice Room Sketch Pad". It has its moments, and in the airy CSN&Y harmonies, one can hear harbingers of Rossen's other band, Grizzly Bear.
