Unlikely as it seems, Simply Red's "Holding Back the Years" has now provoked two very successful jazz versions – Jimmy Scott's tearjerker and the excellent opener to this, nu-jazz diva Parlato's latest album.

Co-produced with the pianist Robert Glasper, it's a mixed bag, with Parlato singing her own lyrics to tunes by a variety of composers, including Wayne Shorter and Miles Davis. What works best is the pop, with Lauryn Hill's gorgeous "All That I Can Say" a stand-out.
