As a Virgin Islander who served an apprenticeship with Art Blakey's

Jazz Messengers before moving to London to become a professor of

saxophone studies, Toussaint has an unusually rounded career, and he records so infrequently that any new CD deserves notice. Here, what could be a simple blowing session culled from two quartet dates becomes a state-of-the-art disquisition on both sax technique and post-bop jazz, seething with energy. On tenor sax, he's a total master; on soprano, less so.
