We've been inundated with rereleases of 1970s music from Africa, so it's refreshing to be informed of an extraordinary Guinean singer from an earlier era. And this is shivers-down-the-spine stuff.
Over rippling, undulating ngoni, kora and the occasional lyrical blasts of saxophone and trumpet, Kouyaté's Caruso-like voice commands attention. The man died 40 years ago, so one can only imagine how life changing it would have been to see him perform.
