Album: Laura Marling, A Creature I Don't Know (Virgin)
Friday 09 September 2011
Laura Marling continues to impress on her third outing, though the transatlantic influences are becoming more apparent.
Not satisfied with just anatomising relationships with the lyrical skill of Joni Mitchell, she's now adopted a few of Joni's melismatic intonations on "Sophia"; and the lilting delivery of "Night After Night" owes more than a little to Leonard Cohen's "Famous Blue Raincoat" – still, you might as well borrow from the best. But Marling has gifts aplenty of her own, as demonstrated in the mythopoeic intrigues of "The Muse" and "The Beast", and also in "Salinas", where lines like "My mother was the saviour of six foot of bad behaviour" bring John Steinbeck's family vividly to life. The folk-rock arrangements are bolder than before, too, from the Espers-style guitar drones of "The Beast", to the keening voices that haunt several tracks.
