It's entirely appropriate that one of the signature sounds on this exploration of Afro-Peruvian rhythms and melodies is produced by a donkey's jawbone, because many of the songs are skeletal in their arrangements.

Gotan Project's Christoph Muller and Peruvian composer and percussionist Rodolfo Munoz are behind this thrilling attempt to reinvigorate African slave music without recourse to dancefloor cliché. This beautifully detailed yet spartan album is certain to be one of the debuts of the year.

Pick of the album: The shake, rattle and gentle roll of 'Que Lindo Suena'
