Album: The Watson Twins, Talking to You, Talking to Me (Vanguard)
Idiosyncratic LA girl-pop.
It's the Watsons' second effort and it's not hard to see why they sell records in the US: they balance their folksy roots with indie artfulness and sing with the kind of unselfconscious "soul" that makes white Americans shiver.
It's what Americans do so well and we seldom do at all, for fear of getting it wrong or being laughed at. Derivative, original, heartfelt, savvy, retro, modern and genuinely enjoyable. Pop not as a procedure but as a subtle and revealing craft. Try it on your daughter.
