Mainstream jazz is an unchanging form that turns away from the past half-century in favour of tunes and pleasure.

That this recording of Gershwin songs is so enjoyable is partly due to the players: Coe on clarinet/sax, Presencer on flugelhorn, pianist Brian Lemon and bassist Dave Green have all done time as spiky modernists, enabling them to treasure these tranquil surfaces. And who could resist "A Foggy Day" and "They Can't Take That Away From Me"? "I Loves You Porgy" is heaven.
