IoD album review: Georgie Fame, Lost in a Lover’s Dream (Three line whip)
Six decades into his remarkably consistent career, Fame has made one of his best albums: a bare-bones trio recorded in Slovenia with guitarist Primoz Grasic and bassist Mario Mavrin.
It opens with a lovely version of “Wide-Eyed and Legless”, Fame’s voice (there’s no Hammond organ) adding trumpet noises, followed by a tender “My Foolish Heart”. On “I Can’t Get Started” he ad-libs: “I toured with Basie’s band for a while/Tony Bennett sketched my profile.”
