IoS album review: Keith Jarrett, Hymns, Spheres (ECM)
First time on CD for the complete LP version of Jarrett's 1976 baroque organ improvisations, recorded on the larger of two Karl Joseph Riepp instruments in Germany.
While the dramatic opening to "Hymns" is conventionally beautiful and ecclesiastical-sounding, Jarrett soon pulls out all the stops (well, half of them anyway) to create a beguiling soundscape that seems poised somewhere between Messiaen and Tangerine Dream. Goes on a bit, obviously.
