The Natives, Trinity, Harrow

(Rated 3/ 5 )

By Elisa Bray

A new scene is emerging from Harrow, with lad-rockers The Natives and Lily Allen-esque singer Kate Nash at the helm.

Tonight two members of The Natives quintet - lead singer Darren Gallagher and guitarist Jon Sihaloho - perform an acoustic set on their home turf. For a guitar pop band that hasn't yet released its first single, an acoustic set is a brave feat, but, aided by the enthusiasm of their local crowd, The Natives casually pull it off.

But then their charismatic front man Gallagher is a star in the making. His indie-boy good looks and cheeky chap charm brazenly wangle him a constant supply of half-drunk pints from the audience. As he downs the beer, lines are forgotten; guitar plucking is paused for cigarettes; but it creates a shambolic energy akin to the Libertines.

The vocal-led ballad "Hotpants" comes halfway through and upcoming debut single "Bright Lights", already played on XFM, is saved for last.

Tonight is just a pared-down glimpse of what is to come from The Natives. While you should catch them supporting The Rifles next month, it won't be long before they are the headliners.
