The Hackney-based Cultural Cooperation's 1994 project in its 'Music Village' series is a six- centre UK and German tour focusing on the music and culture of Morocco. This weekend the assemblage of everything from tents and carpets to cooking utensils and Moroccan musicians is in Bradford, en route for Glasgow, London, Birmingham, Berlin and Frankfurt. Hafla] (Arabic for 'celebration') will be multi-locational in each centre, including street performances and river-based events. Composer Martin Gordon toured Morocco to research both music and musicians, and to make recordings for a new CD release. 'There were some bizarre surprises,' he recalls, 'such as arranging for some Berber musicians to make their way down from the mountains to be recorded - and then finding they turned up in a Mercedes]'
