THE TICHBORNE CLAIMANT (PG, 98 mins)

The Tichborne Claimant plays out in a standard Merchant-Ivory landscape of country homes, pretty frills and sculpted social etiquette. But it's an altogether more savvy affair than the period pictures of yore. Yates's Victorian-era satire has its wily African manservant (Kani) grooming a coarse, boozy Australian (Pugh) to pass himself off as the long-lost heir to an English fortune. This is the cue for playful musing on notions of identity, all brightly conveyed by a gilt-edged cast.
