THE NAU ENSEMBLE: THE ETERNAL - VARIATIONS OF JOY DIVISION (Atrium)
A Swedish classical chamber ensemble playing songs by Manchester's gloomiest group sounds unlikely. It is, but the re-compositions by Hans Ek, the ensemble's leader are suitably dark and foreboding. The combination of a medieval sounding vocal chorus and counter-tenor from the Coro di Bellini conjures up a quasi-religious atmosphere that is most effective. Definitely one for when those long winter nights start drawing in.
