CHARIOTS OF FIRE (8pm Sky Cinema) remains famous for script-writer Colin Welland's Oscar-night declaration that "the British are coming" - still, sadly, unfulfilled. The film itself is an old-fashioned but effective tale of sporting rivalry. It focuses on the build-up to the 1924 Olympics of two contrasting British runners: the Jewish sprinter Harold Abrahams (Ben Cross), and Scottish Christian quarter-miler Eric Liddell (Ian Charleson).

He may not always have the most solid grip of plot, but one thing director David Lynch (right) does possess is a wonderfully quirky imagination. That bears fruit in Dune (8pm FilmFour), his confusing yet visually stunning reading of a sci-fi novel by Frank Herbert. Watch out for the sandworms. The eclectic cast features Kyle MacLachlan, Francesca Annis, Max Von Sydow and Sting.
