After their performance at Reading `98, New Order have been confirmed as headliners for the Mean Fiddler's ambitious and expensive Temptation night on New Year's Eve at Alexandra Palace. Running from 9pm to 10am, the bill also features Underworld, Laurent Garnier and Monkey Mafia playing live while DJ sets come courtesy of the Chemical Brothers (above), Luke Slater, Sasha, The Scratch Perverts and many many more. The Alexandra Palace is fast becoming a favourite for big promoters looking to do things on New Year's Eve and hopefully the Mean Fiddler will be able to overcome some of the organisational difficulties that were encountered last year. Laurent Garnier, Underworld and New Order will also be at the Manchester Evening News Arena on 29 December.

The Camden Mix Festival (16-25 October) offers up the Jungle Brothers, Dave Pike, the Camdemonium bar crawl and other rich pickings in the evenings. There are a series of daytime activities aimed at people starting out in the music industry. Under the auspices of the Musician's Union, the "Get Your Act Together" series of talks explores areas as diverse making it in Japan, releasing your own records plus royalties, rights and taxes. A series of demo juries allow acts to submit tapes to be heard by and commented on by a panel of experts. Four local studios are also opening their doors during the week.
