Brian Johnston, who died on Wednesday, in the co-respondent shoes that he always wore to the cricket. He did more than anyone to make Test Match Special special. He officially retired in 1973, but was still in the commentary box last year, at 81. His voice never aged. Nor did he: he gave schoolboy humour a good name. He was a quirky commentator, not always telling you what was happening ('and he plays that one there'), just being good company, radiating unforced warmth. He made the job seem like a piece of cake.
