"Discworld" chronicler Terry Pratchett (right) has no time for the "sundried squid" school of cooking. He prefers the food at The Castleman Hotel in Chettle (nr Blandford, Dorset: 01258 830096), a short drive from his home.

"We're not in pesto country down here. We're talking real food. They do a superb line in lemon-meringue ice-cream. We know now to look at the sweets when we order, on the basis that they might be gone later on. They do incredibly good vegetables and very good fish - I'm big on fish."

Terry Pratchett's latest Discworld novel, `Carpe Jugulum', is published by Doubleday at pounds 16.99
