There’s been a lot of talk about revolution recently.

After Russell Brand locked horns with Jeremy Paxman calling for an overthrow of the current system, riddled with its “lies, treachery and deceit”, little else has been on the lips of the commentariat.

It got him into a bit of trouble. Comedian Robert Webb accused Brand of apathy, of encouraging young people not to vote and of glamorising violence. This was a point echoed by the Independent columnist Grace Dent who argued: “I’d go out and run amok myself-following Russell’s instructions to be angry, anarchic, non-democractic and to rebel against the small number of people who have wealth – but the problem is, I distinctly remember the nights in August 2011 when this last occurred and the police lost control. It was bloody terrifying."

He’s provoked a lot of debate but generated a lot of support too, suggesting that whether he’s right or wrong he’s voicing opinions held by a sizeable portion of the population. Yet it’s still not clear what ‘Russell’s Revolution’ would look like. Taking a flick through the annals, if the revolution would be anything like this, we want to be involved.
