THIS WEEK'S RELEASES

Fortunes of War (15). Age has notwithered this 1987 BBC series of Olivia Manning's Balkan and Levant Trilogies. Branagh and Thompson first met as the newly-married Pringles, who arrive in Romania as Germany invades Poland. Branagh's lecturer Guy, with his precocious pomposity and nave idealism, is a kind of holy fool. Thompson's Harriet is a proto-feminist blue stocking. They've never been better, both wonderfully funny, as is Ronald Pickup's sponging Irish- Russian aristocrat, Prince Yakimov.

A Bronx Tale (18). Robert De Niro's likeable, competent directing debut, an account of a boy's rites of passage in a gangsterish Italian neighbourhood. De Niro, incongruously, plays the lad's dopey dad, a bus-driver.

Mr Wonderful (PG). Dull romantic comedy with Matt Dillon as the working-class guy who discovers education is an aphrodisiac.
