l Who said Conran had the monopoly on mass dining? Capital Radio has opened its second Radio Cafe in Southampton (01703 211217), to the same formula as the London branch: in-house DJs playing chart hits and dedications, and live bands. Food is burgers, grills and sandwiches.

l London's sister restaurants Montana and Dakota, specialists in south- west US cuisine, now have a third sibling Canyon (0181 948 2944) by the river in Richmond; which also leans heavily on jalapenos, chillies and lime. For those who like to watch the world while dining, a large heated terrace should entice.

l Che (0171 747 9380) opens next week on London's St James's Street, a restaurant and bar named after the Sixties freedom-fighter Guevara. Of course, a cigar lounge features prominently - Che will offer the largest selection of cigars in London, 60 or 70 Havanas at any one time. The menu is being put together by chef James Kirby, formerly of Pied a Terre and Bibendum, who says the dishes will be international rather than being tied to any one style.
