Still haven't decided where to take your beloved for Valentine's Day? One tip is to head for the recently opened Vineyard (01635 528770) in Stockcross, Berkshire. The hotel and its acclaimed restaurant is offering dinner, bed and breakfast for pounds 145 per person on 12, 13 or 14 February. The deal includes a bottle of pink Champagne and a special six-course menu featuring such dishes as tartare of scallops with cucumber, caviare and sherry trifle dressing. But where are the oysters?

Health fanatics and those looking to shed a few pounds but fancy eating out should head for Luscious (159 Praed Street, London W2, 0171 262 9492), a recently opened cafe in Paddington, which serves only low-fat food. Muffins, sandwiches and even chocolate mud cake are on offer - and incredibly, it's all good for you. The owners plan to open further branches soon.

The annual Oxford v Cambridge Boat Race may be almost a month away (3 March), but if you want to see the start of the race in style and enjoy a five-course Boat Race Lunch afterwards, you are advised to book early at Putney Bridge (0181 780 1811, above), which offers panoramic views across the Thames. New chef Anthony Demetre has already won recognition for his modern interpretation of classic French cooking.
