TELEVISION / BRIEFING: Internal affairs

The television schedules at the moment contain more policemen than Scotland Yard; but, unfortunately, most telly cop shows are not up to the standard of BETWEEN THE LINES (9.30pm BBC1). You sometimes require a dictionary of copper-speak to understand J C Wilsher's series about the police who police their colleagues; it is full of such phrases as 'fireproof', 'puppet- show' and 'painting a picture'. And the plots over the 13-week run, which comes to an end tonight, have offered more conspiracy theories than JFK. But the writers and actors - lead Neil Pearson, and reliable supporting players such as Tom Georgeson, Tony Doyle, John Shrapnel and Larry Lamb - have created such plausible characters that a second series has already been commissioned. Tonight 'The Chill Factor' is resolved against the background of a simulated waxwork battle on HMS Belfast.

SHORT STORIES (8.30pm C4) this week takes a trot around The Pony Club. Veronica Reinhardt's debut film focuses on the attempts of Joanne Nesbitt to do well for the Heythrop Hunt Pony Club at the Cotswold Area Horse Trials. She and sister Zoe often rise at four in the morning to prepare their ponies for competition, and mother Jane and father Peter save every last penny to finance their daughters' riding.
