Tom Rawling was born in 1916 on a hill sheep-farm in Cumberland. After reading history at London University, he became a teacher. On his retirement in 1976 he began to write and, encouraged by Anne Stevenson, published his first collection of poems, Ghosts at my Back (OUP, 1982). Rawling's work has appeared in a wide variety of magazines and anthologies; this poem appears in Names of the Sea Trout (Littlewood Arc, pounds 5.95).
