The Independent and the Independent on Sunday are the new sponsors of the Hay Festival, which takes place in Hay-on-Wye from 20-30 May 1994. It is one of the largest literary festivals in the world, and this year there will be more than 200 writers and performers taking part in more than 100 events.

Among the many participating authors will be:

John Banville, E L Doctorow, Clare Francis, Carlos Fuentes, Maggie Gee,

Howard Jacobson, Doris Lessing, Ian McEwan, Jan Morris, Michele Roberts and Vikram Seth.

Lectures from Edmund White and Naomi Wolf; Simon Armitage and other poets;

Howard Jacobson and Tom Sharpe on comedy; the Benjamin Zephaniah band; Redmond O'Hanlon and Colin Thubron on Bruce Chatwin's travels; discussions with politicians, cooks, playwrights, musicians & filmmakers.
