THIS EXHIBITION is the most interesting of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art's recent reappraisals of the so-called Edinburgh school. John Maxwell was a whimsical artist and a bit of a symbolist, but one whose best work was deeply felt and often beautifully realised. He destroyed all but 200 of his life's works, roughly half of which are gathered together for this, the first proper showing of his work in more than 35 years.

John Maxwell, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Belford Road, Edinburgh (0131-556 8921) to 14 Feb

One of London's more eccentric picture dealers presents its annual rag- bag of seasonal possibilities: Pictures for Christmas. This year's selection includes a number of drawings by Stanley Spencer (right).

Abbot & Holder, 30 Museum Street, London WC1 (0171-637 3981) tomorrow to 23 Dec
