Celebrities gripped by Great Gatsby-mania at premiere of new ballet

Stars were gripped by Great Gatsby-mania last night as they flocked to the London premiere of a new ballet based on the in vogue Jazz Age tale.

Actors, models and TV personalities, including Sir Ben Kingsley, Eddie Redmayne and Gok Wan turned out for the opening night of the Northern Ballet's take on F Scott Fitzgerald's novel at the Sadler's Wells theatre.

It is part of a 1920s craze fanned by Australian director Baz Luhrmann's new Great Gatsby movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio, which opens Cannes film festival tomorrow.

Asked about the Twenties fad, TV stylist Gok Wan told reporters: "I love a revival full stop because it makes it really easy for everyone.

"The 1920s are always going to be on trend because of Coco Chanel and as soon as a film comes out like this everyone starts celebrating because it is really, really simple.

"The Twenties were all about glamour, even people who didn't have money still wanted to dress up, it was when women found their independence with their clothing, it was just beautiful - all those dropped waists and those beautiful pearls and the hair was all set, it's just gorgeous."

Sir Ben, who was in town after shooting in Malta and attended the show with his son Ferdinand, said: "I'm a newcomer to ballet, I hadn't seen it for years and then Sadler's Wells started for some reason to invite me so I always offer my guest ticket to my son and we always have a wonderful time - I really love the discipline."

Commenting on his upcoming sci-fi film Ender's Game, which has seen him work with Hollywood grandee Harrison Ford and South African director Gavin Hood, Sir Ben said: "I have only seen some tiny clips of it but I loved working with the director and I think it is going to be an absolutely spectacular film."

Posing on the red carpet with models kitted out in Gatsby-style garb, Strictly Come Dancing judge Craig Revel Horwood and Game Of Thrones star Oona Chaplin were also in attendance.

The Northern Ballet's Great Gatsby opened in Leeds last month before touring the UK.
