Red carpet attendees included Abba’s Benny and Bjorn, who will be singing alongside Mama Mia cast members on stage during the awards, Sherlock’s Mark Gatiss and Martin Freeman, Tom Hiddleston and James McAvoy.
Co-host Stephen Mangan, who will be presenting the show alongside The Duchess of Malfi star Gemma Arterton, said he would be rooting for his production Jeeves and Wooster, but also wished The Book of Mormon well.
Best Actor nominee Rory Kinnear, who is the favourite to win Best Actor for his performance in Othello at the National Theatre, told journalists on the red carpet that the role had been one of the most satisfying moments of his career.
Ibsen adaptation Ghosts, Lucy Kirkwood’s thriller Chimerica and The Book of Mormon all look likely to take an Olivier tonight with five nominations each.
A highlights package from the Oliviers will be broadcast on ITV from 10.15pm tonight, Sunday 13 April.
