Award season always feels more than a little perfunctory by this point in the year, but How I Met Your Mother's Neil Patrick Harris made the audience at the Tony Awards sit up and take note last night with a raunchy drag routine from his Broadway musical Hedwig and the Angry Itch.

Harris plays a hard-rocking transgender woman in the musical and performed the track "Sugar Daddy" from it at the ceremony, heading out in the audience to grind on some famous faces.

The actor straddled Orlando Bloom before heading over to a stunned Samuel L Jackson, removing his glasses and licking them before putting them back on his face.

He then proceeded to treat Sting to a lap dance, before collapsing in the lap of Kevin Bacon.

Harris also found time to squeeze in a kiss with his husband David Burtka, who was sat on the front row.

The performance followed an incredibly eccentric one from Hugh Jackman, who opened the night by hopping around like a kangaroo for five whole minutes.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch won the best revival of a musical award at the ceremony, while the overall best musical prize went to A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder.
