Mandy Patinkin In Concert, Duke of York's, London

(Rated 4/ 5 )

Reviewed by Michael Coveney

Though Mandy Patinkin is well known as one of Stephen Sondheim's most notable exponents, the Broadway star has a much wider portfolio of experience than you'd expect: he makes films (Yentl, The Princess Bride) and appears in major television series (Chicago Hope, Criminal Minds). He's on Madonna's I'm Breathless album.

He also plays Shakespeare and sings in Yiddish, and does a bit of both in his meaty solo show stopping off in London for just nine performances. Expertly accompanied by the pianist Paul Ford, Patinkin appears in slacks and trainers. There's no need to dress up for a programme as honest and raw as this one.

Irving Berlin's "I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas" may not be the song we want to hear in mid January, but it takes on a long-range, yearning, weather forecast-feel in Yiddish. And just when Patinkin gets to the end of Prospero's abnegation of wizardry, he drowns his book in the plangent chords of John Lennon's "Imagine". It's one of many wonderful juxtapositions in a programme that reveals not only Patinkin's range of emotional colours but also his technical virtuosity. From the baritonal hinterland of his vocal engine to those trademark high notes, the skirmishes between registers simply dissolve and the sound is as pure as breathing. Numbers that demand leaping nimbleness and difficult tonal coloration – such as "Bring Him Home" from Les Misérables and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" – are despatched with seamless liquidity and utter conviction.

Patinkin's power and mystery is rooted in his Jewish fervour, which you sense as much in his total affinity with Al Jolson as in his prayer for peace in the Middle East.
