Theatre reviews: Toast
Toast
Royal Court, Ambassadors, London WC2 (0171-565 5000)
There is nothing quite as restful as watching other people at toil, so when a thriving Bradford bakery suffers a disaster one night, and Hull finds itself required to bake enough bread for two cities, there are pleasures galore. The men are up against it in more ways than one, and Richard Wilson's observant, beautifully acted production of Richard Bean's play is delightfully funny and surprisingly poignant. Indeed, in terms of writing, acting and directing, this is buttered on both sides.
