Travel: A Worldwide Neo-Classical Tour

INDIA: NEW DELHI

Totally un-Indian, the white colonnaded architecture of New Delhi - a city planned by the British during the Raj.

IRELAND: DUBLIN

Corinthian pillars and Ionic porticoes line the frontages of Dublin's public and domestic buildings. It is a city filled with impressive examples of the neo-classical style.

RUSSIA: ST PETERSBURG

The Admiralty (1806-1823), adorned with statues of heroes such as Ajax and Achilles, forms the pivotal point of this city. The names may have changed, but the architectural style has remained powerfully neo-classical.

UK: LONDON

John Nash's neo-classical style gave unity to the facades of houses all around Regent's Park, and created the look of today's Trafalgar Square. Cubitt designed Belgravia in the same vein and at the same time (c 1825).

UK: BATH

Throughout the 18th century, several architects developed the same neo-classical style. Bath's elegant crescents and streets are intact.

USA: WASHINGTON DC

Washington's white Vermont marble memorials - Jefferson (1943), Lincoln (1922), the Supreme Court (1935) and the Capitol (c 1793) - are among perfect neo-classical examples.

USA: PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND

Fine examples of neo-classical architecture are grouped together in three main areas: in the old town, with its white-porched 18th- and 19th-century wooden houses; on Brown University campus; and on the East Side with its Gatsby-style mansions such as 'Marble House'.
